Our Approach

  • Relationship First

We strongly believe that the key to successful horse training is a healthy connection between horse and human. When a horse feels secure in the presence of his handler, he will learn desired behaviour more easily, is less likely to demonstrate fear-based behaviour, and will physically develop with less tension in his body. This secure connection is cultivated through calm and consistent communication that sets clear boundaries without inflicting pain or fear. The horse learns to control himself without micromanagement.

  • Gradual Progression

Our approach is designed to limit big “leaps” between training steps. Effective groundwork is used to familiarize the horse with pressure on the poll and nose, vocal cues, leg cues, body language, and the tack. Tack is introduced piece by piece so that the horse is not flooded by new stimuli. The first rides are progressive and any fear responses are diffused using techniques that were established on the ground. This prevents fearful moments from escalating when unfamiliar pressure is applied during a moment of tension. The horse learns to carry herself and her rider in a natural and relaxed way.

  • Responsive Over Reactive

While we work to create a quiet horse, we also strive for a responsive horse. While we create softness in her mind, we create lightness to the aids. A horse learns not from the application of pressure, but from its release. By using the lightest of aids with the initial cue, maintaining the aid through whatever attempts the horse makes to respond, and timing the release when we get the desired behaviour, we create a horse that is “bright” to the aids.

  • A Foundation That Lasts

By limiting any negative experiences and helping the horse find his confidence, we set him up for longterm success. Our most successful training stories, however, are those in which the owner takes an active role in the training of their horse. We encourage owners to be present during training whenever possible and we actively encourage their participation when we judge that the horse is ready. We facilitate everything from groundwork training to the owner’s first rides on their horse.
